Comparing Coriolis, magnetic, vortex and ultrasonic meters

Choose from the measurement objective and site constraints rather than treating one principle as suitable for every application.

Start an application checklist

Choose the quantity before the principle

Specify mass or volume, flow range, fluid state, allowable error and installation conditions. Each technology has advantages that depend on particular conditions; brands and models introduce further limits. This overview supports initial comparison and does not establish product suitability.

Coriolis and electromagnetic

  • Coriolis directly measures mass flow; some instruments also provide density and temperature. Check low-flow performance, pressure loss, entrained gas and wetted-material compatibility.
  • Electromagnetic measurement determines volume flow of liquids meeting the conductivity requirements. Check conductivity, full-pipe conditions, electrodes and lining materials. Diameter alone is insufficient.

Vortex and ultrasonic

  • Vortex meters use vortex-shedding frequency to determine velocity or volume flow and are used for steam, gas and liquid applications. Check low-flow limits, fluid properties, vibration and straight runs; derived mass quantities depend on the compensation configuration.
  • Ultrasonic technologies include transit-time and Doppler methods, with clamp-on and inline designs among others. Check the method, pipe material and thickness, acoustic conditions, bubbles or particles and mounting position. They cannot all be described as unaffected by the fluid.

Compare using one application worksheet

Give every candidate the same minimum, normal and maximum flow, temperature, pressure, fluid and installation information. Compare performance, maintenance, pressure loss and total cost. Treat restricted space, inability to interrupt operation and hygiene needs as explicit constraints. Keep several candidates when information is insufficient rather than forcing a single answer.
