How does a Coriolis meter measure mass flow?

Understand tube vibration, mass flow, density and temperature—and why a measuring principle does not establish a model's capabilities.

Mass and volume answer different questions

Mass flow describes kilograms passing per hour; volume flow describes cubic metres passing per hour. Liquid volume can change with temperature, pressure and density, so the required quantity depends on the process or commercial objective. Coriolis measurement determines mass flow directly, but this does not mean every application is free of measurement error.

The vibrating tube provides the signal

The instrument drives its measuring tube into vibration. Fluid moving through the vibrating tube produces a Coriolis effect, creating a time or phase difference between inlet and outlet signals. Electronics use that difference to determine mass flow. Direct measurement describes the principle; calibration, installation checks and application assessment still matter.

Density and temperature are separate quantities

The resonance behaviour of a fluid-filled tube relates to fluid density and can be used to determine it. Temperature measurement helps compensate for changes in tube properties; some instruments also provide a temperature output. Available outputs, ranges and performance must be checked in the specific model's documentation.

  • Mass flow and volume flow are different display variables.
  • Density, temperature and derived concentration values are not interchangeable.

Turn the principle into application questions

First decide whether the process needs control of batch mass, delivered volume or another quantity. Supply flow range, fluid state, temperature, pressure and allowable pressure loss. Entrained gas, multiple phases and material compatibility require separate assessment. This article explains a general principle, not the suitability of a particular model.
